The Granville 4th of July festivities are over,

but the memories are still fresh in our minds!

This year's parade theme was "100 Years of Scouting" and in honor of that, Assistant Scout Master, Al Dantzer invited all of the Licking County Cub Scout and Boy Scout Units to join Pack 3 and Troop 65 in this event in an attempt to make it as special as it could be. We had the pleasure of being joined by Newark Cub Packs 75, 40 and 14, and Heath Pack 9 along with very strong participation from Newark Boy Scout Troop 4. In fact, most of the Scouts that were seen walking and carrying flags in the parade were our guests!

Since the Cub Pack 3 winning float was supported by a team of guest Scout units from Newark and Heath, Pack 3 is donating the $100.00 winnings to the Licking County Food Pantry Network on behalf of the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts of Licking County.

Don't Miss the Trees For the Forest!

The Kiwanis Club of Granville is planting 1000 trees and packaging seedlings to give out on Earth Day at Granville Schools. All scouts- boys, girls and adults- are welcome to come and help in this service project. Twenty years from now these trees will provide the maple syrup for the annual Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast.

Location: Just off Spring Valley Drive at our staging area alongside the Salt Run Field
Date &Time: Saturday, April 18th starting at 9am we will work until we are done. Probably early afternoon
What to Bring: Work clothes and gloves

The Kiwanis Club of Granville is the chartering organization for both Boy Scout Troop 65 and Cub Scout Pack 3. Please come and help even if you can only stay for a little while.

This Saturday morning, March 7, Cub Scout Pack 3 will be roaming throughout the Granville area looking for the brown paper grocery bags with yellow flyers on front porches, doorsteps, or by garages, set out by you with canned goods for the Licking County Food Pantry Network.

Last Saturday, we covered as much of the area as we safely could; some of you may have been missed, and if so, we're sorry! The truck where the various Cub Scout dens will take the collected items will be down by Raccoon Creek at the Granville Market from 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday, and feel free to drop your bag off if you wish. Others may have purchased the bags loaded by Cub Scouts this past week at Granville Market, and left them there, and those will be put aboard the truck as well.

This is obviously a critical time for food pantries all across the country, and certainly in Licking County. God & Country Awards

UPDATE - Our God & Country team served over 175 large slices of handmade pizza to worshipers between the two Ash Wednesday services at Centenary; they greeted, served, and cleaned up along with their culinary endeavors, with a little lesson about being church and working together learned as we made the first three big 'zas for ourselves.

God and Country Awards

"God and Country" awards are an independent program for youth in Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Campfire, and 4-H groups. They are designed so they can fulfill requirements for understanding and acting on their religious beliefs through their home congregation, and earn the award which is then worn as part of their uniform or recognitions in the program where they are active.

Centenary is very proud of fifteen youth who have worked in the weeks leading up to Lent to earn their Scouting religious awards; they met weekly and completed their work by serving and cleaning up the Ash Wednesday dinner between services. They are listed by group as the religious awards program is designed for certain grade levels, and they may earn each level's insignia as they grow up, some achieving all four, concluding with God and Life for 9-12 graders.

Paper Airplane Fly-In

This is what ensues when 100 Cubs and a bunch of siblings (plus a few parents) make paper airplanes and fly them at a Pack meeting . . . the pack meeting which is "officially" Cubmaster Al's and my last ones "in charge." Asst. Cubmaster Ed will take over after Blue & Gold next month! So Al got to do his favorite airplane mass flight and i got to lead both "German Orchestra" and "Up In the Air, Junior Birdman."

You are fortunate indeed that no one took pictures during "German Orchestra"! Thanks to Jerry & Nicole Lukins for taking pictures and passing them along to me. Click individual pics for larger versions.

Annual Cub Scout Pack Three Food Drive

From the 2007 Food Drive Pick-up day

[this is our official "press release," and we will be handing out bags and flyers to the dens at this Thursday's pack meeting, with the intention that most dens will distribute stapled flyer/bags to homes in their assigned area on the morning of Sat., Feb. 28.]

Saturday March 7th is the date of the Annual Granville Cub Scout Pack 3 Food Drive.
Area Cub Scouts will be passing out grocery bags donated by the Ross’ Granville Market to area homes the week prior. Residents are asked to fill the bags with nonperishable food items and set the bags on their front porch at 9:00 a.m. on the 7th. Scouts will canvass the neighborhoods and bring the bags to the Granville Ross’ Market parking lot between 10 a.m. and 1p.m. Licking County Food Pantry will have their truck at Granville Ross’ Market for the collected bags. Residents may drop off their bags themselves if they wish.

The Granville Market will also feature pre-packed bags containing $5 worth of nonperishable food items, which will be packed by scouts themselves. Bags that are purchased at the market may be brought home for collection or left at the market and will be picked up on the 7th.

This is an important year for the Food Drive. Chuck Moore of the Licking County Food Pantry stated, “The pantry is serving 24% more meals than last year. Every month the pantry serves 2500 households.” The Granville Area Cub Scouts look forward to this opportunity to help others.

Granville Super Pack 3

Don't wait until the last minute to make those cars!

Granville Lumber is a great resource for getting your initial rough cut down. They enjoy offering this free service to our Cubs and to the Girl Scouts. It really helps to have some good clean and precise initial cuts.

(of course plastic wood works great for nicks and boo boos).

Remember that although parents can help, it is better to let the scout do most of the work. The boys take great pride in this. If there are frustrated parents that are mechanical engineers (at heart), then make your own car and race in the Open Class rather than racing against the kids.

Making a car side by side with your son can be a fun and rewarding learning experience. Each year, by actually doing it, the boys become more comfortable with each piece of the car and with the assembly.

Have fun. Please keep it fair and honest.

No Liquid lubricants - they are against the rules and they give a car a dramatic unfair advantage. Only the dry graphite or moly powdered lubes please.

The Friday open track and open scales are an important part of the car setup - try to make that if at all possible.

And we welcome any adults who wish to help set up the track and the event - GIS Friday at 4pm

January Pack Meeting - Cancelled!

Our standard procedure is that no school means no pack meeting (among other things, the building is likely to be locked and cold). Granville schools are closed for Thursday, Jan. 15, so the monthly third Thursday pack meeting is cancelled. Friday isn't looking too good, either . . .

For Pinewood Derby info leading to weight testing Friday, Jan. 23 and racing on Saturday, Jan. 24, scroll on down for the flyer text, copied at earlier posts. We will continue to post hints and tips here over the next week and a half for Pinewood car crafting -- with sandpaper and model paints, it's never too late!

(Also, info on the Feb. 8 hockey game in Columbus for OSU can be found by scrolling down into the December pack meeting post.)

Meanwhile, here's some quick tips courtesy of Buckskin Council, Charleston WV:

Pinewood Derby Tips and Hints

FRICTION: One of the best ways to eliminate friction is graphite. A good dosage may not do wonders for the paint job, but it will for your axles (hopefully you didn't glue the axles too far in or that will impair the wheel). Most axles in the kits have burrs on them around the head. De-burr the axles with a small file.

WEIGHT: It boils down to this, the closer you get to 5 ounces without going over, the better off you will be. The placement of the weight on the car (front or back) is an item which has been argued for years. Weight toward the rear seems to work best, along as the front wheels track straight. Just remember – gravity is the only power these cars use.

AERODYNAMICS: There are just about as many arguments on this topic as there are Pinewood Derby racers. It has been tried, several times, to race a car, as is, straight out of the box with no cutting, shaping or painting of the wood. These cars seem to perform, on average, just as well as the low, sleek, aerodynamic models. The bottom line is: Let the boy design the car, and help him achieve his design! If the adult wants to tinker with the car, tinker with the wheels and axles. The car design has almost no bearing on the outcome of the race.

ALIGNMENT: Make sure that the car's wheels are placed as straight as possible. Place the car on the floor and roll it about 8 to 10 feet. The car should go in a straight line. Adjust with the axle placement to make double sure the car will roll straight.

WHEELS and AXLES: Make sure that the axles are glued securely to the wood. Also ensure that the wheel is not glued to the axle. The wheels are single most important part. Make sure the wheels are on straight and turn freely.

DESIGN / SHAPE: The finish line uses electronic infrared sensors to detect the car moving across the finish line. These sensors are directly centered in each lane of the track. The starting gate of the track uses a bolt in the center of the track. This is to ensure that the length of roll each car will have to the finish line sensors will be the same for each car no matter what the shape of each car is. Keep a high track clearance so that nothing has a chance to rub on the underside of the car. Remember that the cars straddle a wood lath as they roll down the track.

PAINT: Let your imagination run wild!! Whether you use 50 coats of hand rubbed lacquer, olive drab or no paint at all, all it will do is affect the looks of your car. It will not run any faster or slower whether it's red, blue, green, yellow, flames, no-flames, or pink polka-dots!! Let the boy paint the car. Drips of spray paint don't slow the car down.

ACCESSORIES: Glue those Lego and Pokemon characters in! Anything that falls off in the race stays off. This can lighten you car enough to slow it down.

Cub Scouting in 2009

(If you're a current Pack 3 parent looking for info on the Jan. 3 ice skating or upcoming OSU hockey game, scroll past the Pinewood Derby info to the "December Pack Meeting" post -- pax, jbg)

For parents considering Cub Scouting in 2009 (you can join at any point in the year, not just in the fall), most packs are like us -- a shirt is ideal but not necessary, and is $30 with patches, the book for the grade level is $6, and national registration is $10 to which we add $30 in our pack for $40 which covers the whole year. Add in $12 if you want "Boy's Life" magazine, 12 issues, and it's $52. So less than a hundred bucks for 12 months of healthy, fun, educational activity in 9 or 10 pack meetings (once a month) and another 20 or so den meetings (twice a month with your smaller age/grade level group).

Cub Day Camp is about $50 for four days of great outdoor adventure and learning in June. Overall, this is as cost-effective a youth activity as you're going to find; most packs sell popcorn in the fall to cover the awards and activities of the pack, and in the spring there's an offer for you to give to Scouting which is voluntary.

Official Rules

All cars must pass inspection to qualify for the race.
Late registrations will not be accepted.

· Cars must be made during the current year with new kits.
· The width of the car shall not exceed 2-¾ inches (including wheels and axles).
· The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
· The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces.
· Wheel spacing between the front and rear axle shall be between 3-½ and 4-½ inches
· Derby cars must maintain a 1-¾ inch width where the axles are located and must clear the track guide strips.
· Wheels and Axles: Use only Pinewood Derby wheels and axles that come with your kit. You can polish the axles. You may lightly sand the wheels to remove the molding seam on the tread. No other wheel changes are allowed. You may not use bearings, washers, bushings or hubcaps.
· The use of liquid lubricants and oils are strictly prohibited.
· Only dry graphite or the white dry lubricants are permitted.
· The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs.
· The car must be freewheeling, no starting devices (or high powered explosive devices, rocket motors or jet engines)

Inspection: Each car must pass inspection by the Official Inspection Committee before it may compete. The Inspectors will disqualify any car not meeting these rules. Any adult or scout may appeal the findings of the Inspectors to the Race Committee Chairperson, whose decision is final.

Race Day
Good sportsmanship is expected by all.
The Pinewood Derby is open to all Cub Scouts of Pack 3.
Open Class is open to anyone who registers a car that passes the inspection.

Please talk with your child about winning and losing. It is very hard for some when they don’t win. Cheer for your den and encourage sportsmanship.

Adults set the example.

Pool-Pizza Party Sat., Nov. 22, Newark Y

OK -- this is an edited, updated post for the Pool-Pizza Party, which had over 100 Cubs and family members turn out to the Newark Y last Saturday night! Thanks to everyone who helped out.

Remember that den leaders need to have all your popcorn/green money turned in by 7:00 pm on Monday, Dec. 1, and we hope that you have either checks made out to "Granville Pack 3" or take money you get and write one check to "Granville Pack 3" when you turn it in.

Also, everyone *EXCEPT* Tigers need to turn in their $40 or $52 for the new calendar year's registration and dues ($40 for that, another $12 for $52 if you have a "Boy's Life" subscription), which your den leader can bring in on Monday, Dec. 1 as well. Thank you!

Scouting History & Heritage

From a friend here in Licking County who was a Boy Scout in the early 1930's, before Camp Falling Rock opened; this is from the southern side of the Licking River east of Newark north of Blue Jay Road where one of the first Scout summer camps was held.

In the front row, in the polka dot neckerchief, is the Licking County Council's first Scout executive, Mike Bauman, front row 2nd from left, and 3rd from left is Bill Reynolds, scoutmaster for Troop 6.

UPDATE: The man who sent me this jpg tells me it is more likely to be 1925 or 1926, just before Camp Falling Rock opened in 1928, with Franklin Lodge built in 1938 on the spot where the original Mess Hall was re-built . . . that having been brought from Blue Jay Camp in pieces, and erected there as the first building at CFR.

The centerpiece of the website is the Calendar everyone can use to indicate when they'd like to provide a dinner. That takes you to the Task Sign Up, where you can provide more information about what you'll be bringing and also sign up for multiple days. So whether you want to bring one meal in the next 6 months or provide a weekly meal, simply click on the calendar on the right hand side of the page to indicate the days for which you'll be responsible. (Note: the days you select will turn from green to blue in those calendars. To de-select a day simply click on it again and it will turn back to green.)

Granville Super Pack 3 had a great Family Weekend, with Troop 65 supporting our Webelos IIs as they prepare for crossover this March -- 154 people in over 60 watercraft meandered down 7 miles of the Mohican River; Friday night some 35 families with well over 100 campers stayed at the "Large Group Campground" of Mohican State Park, and 50+ were in residence for Saturday night's space shuttle flyover and a last night under tentage.

That's an awesome weekend no matter how you count it -- many thanks to Ed Shuttleworth for Saturday lunch at the riverside, Marc Monnin for Saturday dinner up at the campsite, Cubmaster Al for the Webelos activities (while yours truly took the Second Class Boy Scouts out for a plant/tree hike for their First Class requirements), and Jim Spichiger for early arrangements.

Join us on October 25 for Cub Scout leader training at St. Luke’s Episcopal in Granville. St. Luke’s is on the southeast corner of Broadway and Main.

Cost is $20 for the all day Basic Adult, Youth Protection, and specific of your choice.
This includes Leader training book, lunch, and teaching materials

If you are already trained and just want to advance with your scout join us for the afternoon for the specific of your choice for a materials fee of $5.

The experience begins at 8:30am so please register with us starting at 8

Tiger parents and families --

This is a quick reminder that after storm and power outages set us back a bit, we are having our first monthly Pack meeting of the school year Thursday night, Sept. 25, at 7 pm in the multipurpose room of Granville Elementary School. Normally, the large group gathering of a "Pack" meeting is always the third Thursday of the month, but last week wasn't in the cards!

October 4 is our Pack 3 Family Canoeing day up at Mohican outside of Loudonville, with groups pushing off at 9 am and at 2 pm (come for either, or both); the large group camping area is reserved for our Pack and Scout Troop 65 in Mohican State Park for Friday night Oct. 3 and Sat. night Oct. 4, and you may come pitch your tent with us without reservation. We are trying to get a count for the canoeing slots, and the Cubs are "free" while adults and siblings are regular rates, which we collect at the Mohican Canoe Livery (see http://www.mohicancanoe.com/river-trips.html -- we do Trip #1). There will be a flyer at the Pack meeting, along with info on our planned trip to The Wilds on the October 17 Friday teacher in-service day.

We plan to start with a flag ceremony, general announcements, some singing, and then the boys will go outside for a real "blast" with the Boy Scouts launching some model rockets while the parents stay back for some further organizational info.

For anyone still wanting to join through the fall, $40 is the whole school year's dues/registration, plus $12 for Boys Life magazine, and we will distribute the Popcorn/Greens sale info, which is our only fundraiser along with dues that we collect.

Dear Parents,

AEP was not able to restore power to Granville Elementary School. GES will be closed on September 18. The other schools have power and will be open.

AEP predicts GES will have power restored at some point in the day on Thursday. You will receive more updates as we learn about AEP's progress.

Our Pack meeting to start the school year that would be Thursday, Sept. 18, may have to be moved to Thursday, Sept. 25. Our normal plan is that if there is no school during the day (usually snow days, but still), then we don't have Pack meeting.

Odds are 50-50 for school Thursday, so I have begun to ask for the permissions to shift this month to the fourth Thursday, Sept. 25. Stay tuned for more updates.

July 4th is not only the wrong day to celebrate the Declaration of Independence (you could go with July 2 or 8 just as accurately, first reading and vote on 2nd, most signed it on the 8th), but as for the day we began to be the country that we are, we have been, and that we might just yet fulfill, Sept. 17 is THE day -- the day the Constitution was officially voted into existence under the preamble: "We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

Modern historiography tends to focus on the compromises and the shortcomings, which are many in the document (the 3/5th compromise the most egregious of them all, putting a lesser work on some humans while still leaving them in bondage even as you gave their owners votes based on their bleeding backs). What Catherine Drinker Bowen called it in her still readable account, now almost 50 years old itself, is a "Miracle at Philadelphia."

They gathered to tweak the Articles of Confederation, which were nearly unworkable from 1776 over the next ten years. Unlike the blazing talent of a Thomas Jefferson writing the whole, the group process -- with leadership like Benjamin Franklin and James Madison and Edmund Randolph and Governeur Morris, to be sure -- created a remarkable document that has just enough flexibility to work without being so rigid as to require constant adjustment.

The European Union tried to write themselves a constitution starting in 2004, and they came up with an unreadable volume that to date has not been ratified (they're starting over after a "period of reflection."). The length and comprehensiveness of the EU draft constitution is a big part of why they can't get it passed; our Constitution, for all its flaws, can be read in just a few minutes by anyone.

Pack 3 Fall Recruitment - Sept. 4

Pack 3 den leaders and families --

Our Fall Recruitment season is rolling and we need your help to pick up speed! Next Thursday, Sept. 4, at 7:00 pm we will have a New Scout Information Night in the Multipurpose Room of Granville Elementary. All parents/family members of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd graders who are interested in joining Pack 3 as Tigers, Wolves, or Bears can come and learn a bit more about the Scouting program, ask questions, and fill out registration forms.

We will send flyers home on Tuesday through the elementary school, and Mr. Rogers will notify parents through the school e-mail newsletter, but we will not be able to speak directly to the kids after lunch as we have in years past, so a little extra activity from current Cub Scout families will really help. Please make sure to forward this info to friends and neighbors who have boys in the family who might enjoy Cub Scouts, or just walk down your street and let them know -- it's still nice out evenings!

We would love it if as many boys as possible who are already in Cub Scouting would wear their uniform shirts or Pack t-shirts to school on Thursday, to help remind everyone that in the evening we will be in the MPR to sign up new Cubs and explain the program to parents.

Pack meetings continue to be at the multipurpose room of GES on third Thursdays at 7:00 pm, with our first school year meeting on Sept. 18, and remind folks that Pack meetings are for everyone, while Den meetings are the smaller, age level group you'll meet with in between. Cubmaster Al Dantzer (587-1702) is organizing a Pack outing to the Denison Bioreserve for a little early autumn hiking on the Sunday before, 2:00 pm Sept. 14.

Help us get the word out about Cub Scouting, and Granville's Super Pack 3! We had a marvelous Hog Roast last week, gave the Licking County Food Pantry Network half a ton of much needed canned goods and donations, and are preparing for another great year of community service, rank advancement, and growing up smarter and wiser . . . which includes all us adults! We learn so much from the kids, which is why signing up adult volunteers is a great opportunity this time of year, too.

Remembering Tim Haley

Tim Haley and his wife Renee were often at Pack events with their sons (two in Cubs, Brandon and Tristan, and the younger boy Devon); they came out to Cub Day Camp last June and Tim had been part of the last two years' whitewater trips down to West Virgina.

Tim died on Tuesday after falling ill on a training exercise for his SWAT team with the Columbus Police. More of that story can be found here:

Get a Peace of Scouting

This Saturday, Granville’s own Super Pack 3, our Cub Scouting organization, will have their start of the school year picnic out at Infirmary Mound Park.

Aug. 23 at 3:00 pm the lawn chairs and shady canopies will unfurl around the bounce houses and food tents back behind the horse show arena, and a few hundred Cubs and Scouts and little brothers and sisters (plus parents) will say hello to a new school year of Cub Scouting (and a hog will end his year, with our sincere appreciation shown in bbq sauce).

First graders are Tiger Cubs, and from those newest Scouts to the Webelos ready to make the jump in March to Boy Scouts in Fifth grade, we have over 150 young men in Super Pack 3.

The normal pack meeting, the gathering of the whole shebang, is at 7 pm on third Thursdays right through May, but the heart of Scouting is the small group: dens in Cub Scouts, patrols in Boy Scouts. Each grade has a “rank,” Tigers in First, Woves in Second, Bears in Third, and Webelos in Fourth and Fifth. And each rank has three to five dens (Pack 3 had 21 dens last year), which is where the real Scouting program happens, learning about the outdoors, themselves, and what it means to be a citizen and a leader among your peers.

The Scouting Movement goes back to 1907, 1910 in the US, and really to May of 1900, when the entire British Empire went crazy over good news in a very bad year. The Boer War had gone badly for England in South Africa, and a small outpost had been cut off and assumed overrun. It turned out that Mafeking was holding out against overwhelming odds, and on May 18, 1900, a relief column made it to the city and commanding officer Robert Baden-Powell.

Baden-Powell, or B-P as he was known by both friends and respected enemies, returned to a hero’s welcome, and the startling news that his book written for soldiers, “Aids To Scouting,” was selling like hotcakes among young boys (and girls) back home, with “B-P Clubs” starting in various towns (think Michael Phelps and swim clubs).

B-P was actually disturbed by this – he had not written the book for children, and knew that romanticism of warfare was not what young people needed. On the other hand, he saw so many city kids new to the military come into the wilderness helpless, starving where food was handy and dying of thirst where water was available. If kids thought heat came from furnaces and food from grocery stores, what would you expect?

So he turned down a cushy spot in the military bureaucracy, retired a General, and spent two years doing research and writing (in Windmill Cottage next to Wimbledon, which I’m told you can still visit). Then he told his publisher, eager to hit the shelves while his fame was still remembered, that he wouldn’t sell his scheme until he tried it himself.

B-P called his new plan “Peace Scouts,” and used the “patrol method” to deliver character formation and leadership development through outdoor education, with a focus on learning by doing, not adults standing up talking unless it was storytelling. And he did one thing that some still think controversial – he kept uniforms as a central feature of his program.

Uniforms weren’t about militarism, but about uniformity. Because the test run of his new book, “Scouting For Boys,” was to bring 22 young men to an island off the English coast, 11 from the city, and 11 from the small towns and countryside, 11 from some level of privilege and 11 from humbler backgrounds. The Scout uniform was meant, and still means that all the boys are on a level playing field, with only their individual achievements marked with “merit badges” and “activity awards” which they earned by competing against . . . themselves.

August 1, 1907, these 22 boys and three adults spent two weeks testing out “Scouting For Boys,” and the program they began there now serves 38 million young men and women all over the world, in over 200 countries (basically, every country but Cuba and China).

The program gave birth to not only Boy Scouts but Girl Guides, called Girl Scouts in this country, and in 1930 the junior level, Cub Scouting was formally organized. The nation with the largest total number of Scouts in all phases? Nope, not the USA, which “only” has 7.5 million registered – that would be Indonesia, with over 8 million young men and women in Scouting.

[Below is text Cubmaster Al sent around to den leaders, with attached maps -- remember we can't drive around Rt. 16 and enter from the west this year, so getting over to Wildwood Park needs to be done earlier, with the likelihood of some extra traffic back-ups, so don't cut it too close to 10 am! YiS, Jeff]

Everybody loves a parade! Especially when there are Cub Scouts in it.

The July 4th Parade will be on Friday July 4 beginning around 10:30 am.

MEETING AREA:
Cub Pack 3 will meet in front of the restrooms at Wildwood Park on Broadway. We will start gathering there around 8:30 am, and no one will be let into the staging area after 10 am. Judging for the floats will begin at 9am.

We are planning to have a float that will have 8 - 10 Scouts on it. We will also have the Color Guard with two Scouts carrying the flags and two Scouts carrying our banner.

Cub Scouts will be passing out US flags along the parade route. We received funding from American Legion Post 398 for the flags. (American Legion Post 398 was Pack 3's original founding organization in 1940!). We will probably have some candy to pass out as well so we don't hand out all of the flags at once.

FLOAT :
Most of our float set up and decoration will be done at the staging area, so please get there early to help decorate it. We will probably need some Scouts on the float for judging some time after 9am. The float will have a couple of tents, a mock camp fire with Scouts roasting marshmellows, a couple of Scouts with fishing poles and other misc. outdoors scouting items. If you have a small tent that we can use, please call me at 587-1702 immediately.

WHAT TO WEAR:
Scouts please wear your best uniforms!!!! The more in uniform the better, but if no uniform, then at least the Pack t-shirt. And if no uniform or t-shirt - then at least the Scout wearing something presentable. {Any darker blue mostly solid color t-shirt will work - Jeff}

Families, siblings, friends, etc. are welcome to walk with us and parents are encouraged to help keep an eye on our guys and help keep them from getting strung out too far.

Watch the weather, if it looks like rain bring a light weight poncho or umbrella.

WAGONS:
We also need wagons for adults to pull for the flags, coolers, water, and other items. We will be decorating them on site as well - We will have some decorating supplies, but if you can, please bring some as well.

END OF PARADE:
When the parade is over we will be picking up trash along the last part of the parade route from Granger & College to Broadway & Pearl. We will have trash bags and gloves. Please plan for this if at all possible. It will be easy since we will be staged near the end of the parade.

Pack 3 had about two dozen of the record attendance out at Camp Falling Rock, almost 425 Cubs and 48 siblings, plus 120+ registered adults (which Pack 3 provided at least five of on any given day) and many more shuttle drivers and part-time walkers.

Next June we may be looking at split sessions, with Webelos having their own time slot and Tiger/Wolf/Bear Cubs in their own. We surely know that the setting and facilities we used this summer can't handle any more than they did!

Pack 3 will march in the Granville Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 26!

Cubmaster Al will gather us at 10:15 am, on the brick street between Centenary UMC and First Presby; we walk down Broadway to Pearl, down to Maple Grove Cemetery, half-hour program and we're dismissed from there. Some folks (especially older grandparents) go on down to Maple Grove at 9:30 or after and set up their lawn chairs and wait for us there.

The Pack leadership decided to pass on Cubmobile this year, since we have so much going on over these next few months.

Pack meeting this Thursday includes our "Dirty Jobs" salute, where parents are invited to come with a quick demo of some job they have or had which has an odd outfit, messy element, or weird twist to it (aim for a 2 minute time frame, please!). Biohazard suits, insulating gloves, wild looking tools -- anything but a bucket of eyeballs!

This has not been a kind year for weather on our Pack 3 special event days -- due to the likelihood of rain, and the need for 150 bales of straw to keep the kids safe, which if we get 'em wet can't be returned so they're ours (giving us 150 useless bales at $3.95 each) . . .

The Cubmobile Race Day is canceled for Saturday, Apr. 19. We will try to reschedule for June 7, but that is entirely tentative based on street availability and straw bales, trailer transport, etc.

As you know we have scheduled the Cubmobile race for this Saturday, April 19th. Looking at the weather forecast there is a 40-50% chance of rain on that day. Since we “borrow” 100-150 bales of straw from the Granville Milling Company for this event, we cannot afford to get the bales of straw wet. If they are wet, Pack 3 will have to purchase the bales for $3.95 a bale. Therefore if it is raining on Saturday or the outlook looks like it is going to rain for sure we will need to cancel the event. If we cancel the event, we will send an email to all the den leaders. We would like the den leaders to make sure everyone in their den knows the event is canceled.

Cub Scouts, a few Boy Scouts with Troop 65, and some of our Girl Scout buddies all pitched in to make our snow-delayed food drive work out for the hungry of Licking County -- good work all. We'll have some stats after Monday, 17 March, so check back (and Blue & Gold photos, too).

UPDATE 19 March -- Chuck Moore of the Licking County Food Pantry Network reported to Pack 3 that we brought in 4,000 pounds of canned goods, which he thought was awesome for a "make-up" date. And we'll get back to our usual 5 ton return next year!

Please tell people who ask about the Pack 3 Food Drive bag they still have at home that any "Operation Feed" drive will happily take that sack of groceries, and the county-wide push continues through March.

Why yes, i have heard there's a little precipitation called for tonight. What are you hearing?

I'm trying to confirm from the Food Pantry Network that we can get the truck from 10 to Noon next Saturday before i pull the trigger, and tell all the media i can get ahold of to put out the word that we're not asking people to put their bags out tomorrow, but a week from tomorrow. If they can't do next Saturday, then i need a Plan C before i move off of Plan A!

But 10+ inches is a deal breaker, even for rough and tough Cub Scouts, and my measure is really whether moving the pick up day will get us more food for the pantry than staying put. At this point, it's sounding like we'll have less food to show for our efforts if we try to pull it off in the heavy snow falling from midnight to 10 am, so i'm *intending* to push us back a week -- stay tuned for final word when i hear from some of our other partners.

As for the Saturday forecast, the plan B is . . . there is no plan B! If the weather is truly horrible, as in Level 2 or 3 Snow Emergency horrible for Licking County, we can try to ask for the Food Pantry Network truck to come on Mar. 15, Blue & Gold Saturday in the morning, but we have limited means to let folks know what's happened.

So just use your best judgment, do what you can, but assume that we will still have the truck at Opera House Park in downtown Granville, on Broadway next to St. Luke's Episcopal Church right in front of the big bell, from 10 am to Noon -- this Saturday, March 8.

If the county sheriff's office puts us at Snow Emergency 2 or 3, i will get the Advocate paper and website, radio and TV stations to post "Granville Food Drive postponed to next Saturday" and we'll do what we can then. But just scuzzy weather alone doesn't cancel this Saturday! It will impact our giving, but i think trying to re-set to next week would drop it even farther.

For the Boy Scouts of America, our official starting date is traditionally observed as Feb. 8, 1910, since the federal charter was issued on that day, now 98 years ago. Scout Sunday/Sabbath is marked by many churches, especially when they are the chartering organization for a Scout group, and the first or second weekend of February is when that observance falls.

We marked the 100th anniversary of the actual beginning of the Scouting program last summer, when Baden-Powell field tested the book he was about to release, "Scouting for Boys," with a camp at Brownsea Island. PINEWOOD DERBY RESULTS!!!!!

Granville Cub Scout Pack 3 hosted the 2008 Pinewood Derby on Saturday, January 26 at GIS for the Granville Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.

The racing action featured homemade models shaped as shiny race cars, silly school buses, pencils, hot dogs, lizards, catsup bottles, wedges of cheese, army tanks, slices of pizza, lightning bolts, the silver surfer, a snow man, and other imaginative designs concocted by first through eighth graders who are in the Granville scouting programs.

Granville Lumber helps many scouts to cut their wood blocks into shapes. They keep a running tally with a year-to-year record marked on the side of their band saw.

82 Girl Scouts, 121 Cub Scouts, 6 Boy Scouts and 42 Open Class entrants competed for trophies in age-based race events on Cub Scout Pack 3’s twin aluminum tracks. Times for over 250 four-car races were electronically measured, tracked by computer and projected on two large screens for audience viewing.

This is a big event made possible by over a dozen parent volunteers and numerous Boy Scout, Girl Scout and Cub Scout helpers dressed in striped Race Official shirts.

There's some new info at the Yorktown trip blog linked just below (or on the link that will stay to the right). If you're clicking in for Pinewood stuff, just scroll down, but you might want to read this first . . .

For all den leaders and other pack officers, think about "New Leader Essentials" (NLE) training on Sat., Feb. 23, in Newark at Central Christian Church on Mt. Vernon Rd.

If you've ever taken NLE, you don't need to do it again, but if you've never had it, this would be a great chance. The training day starts at 8:30 am, and there's always a good pile of bagels and donuts and fruit along with the coffee and juice. If you are just wanting NLE, you can leave at lunchtime, but if you want to get the extended training for den leadership, Cubmastering, Committee chair/treasurers, or advancement, lunch is served and they'll have you out by 2 to 3:30 depending on which specialized training you sit in with.

Pack 3 will get some major financial incentives (starting with free advancement, which could save us $700 plus per year) if we have at least half of our key leaders trained, so it is a day that helps you work with the Cubs, and gives you a way to help the Pack. Look at it that way, and you're making $100 an hour for us by participating!

If you think you can make it, give Jeff Gill a call or e-mail, but you can just show up; they're just wanting to make sure to have enough food. There's anywhere from 12 to 40 at one of these winter training days. You learn about the Scouting program as a whole, and get a good sense of what your child can do over the next few years in Cubs, Boy Scouts, Venturing, and even some of the High Adventure activities available.

Official Rules

All cars must pass inspection to qualify for the race.
Late registrations will not be accepted.

• Cars must be made during the current year with new kits.
• The width of the car shall not exceed 2-¾ inches (including wheels and axles).
• The length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
• The weight of the car shall not exceed 5 ounces.
• Wheel spacing between the front and rear axle shall be between 3-½ and 4-½ inches
• Derby cars must maintain a 1-¾ inch width where the axles are located and must clear the track guide strips.
• Wheels and Axles: Use only Pinewood Derby wheels and axles that come with your kit. You can polish the axles. You may lightly sand the wheels to remove the molding seam on the tread. No other wheel changes are allowed. You may not use bearings, washers, bushings or hubcaps.
• The use of liquid lubricants and oils are strictly prohibited.
• Only dry graphite or the white dry lubricants are permitted.
• The car shall not ride on any kind or type of springs.
• The car must be freewheeling, no starting devices (or high powered explosive devices, rocket motors or jet engines)

Inspection: Each car must pass inspection by the Official Inspection Committee before it may compete. The Inspectors will disqualify any car not meeting these rules. Any adult or scout may appeal the findings of the Inspectors to the Race Committee Chairperson, whose decision is final.

Race Day

Good sportsmanship is expected by all.
The Pinewood Derby is open to all Cub Scouts of Pack 3.
Open Class is open to anyone who registers a car that passes the inspection.

Please talk with your child about winning and loosing. It can be very hard for some when they don’t win. Cheer for your den and encourage sportsmanship.

Adults set the example.

Greetings from Cubmaster Al -- we hope some version of this will appear in the Sentinel this week!

Granville Cub Scout Pack 3 reached out and touched the lives of our servicemen and women in Iraq and Afghanistan by sending holiday care packages and homemade greeting cards. Boy Scout Troop 65 added to the holiday gifts by contributing loads of snacks, drink mixes and food items that are hard to find in these far away places.

The Scouts and their families sent nearly 200 pounds of items in 11 boxes to four separate units. The boys made personalized cards and collected items at a Pack meeting in October. The packages were mailed just before Thanksgiving and many were delivered to the troops in only one week. Recipients included three Ohio-based Army and Air Force units in Iraq and a base in Afghanistan with Navy, Army, Air Force and Seabee servicemen and women.

In Afghanistan the Cub Scout cards were posted as soldiers and sailors helped themselves to the goodies and the outreach of love and support from Granville. Photos, thank-you emails and greeting cards were sent back to the Scouts to complete the connection of holiday cheer. Seabee Engineer Tim in Afghanistan sent a photo of two Afghan children enjoying some of the treats from Granville. His greeting card states: “Pack 3, Thanks for thinking of us!”

Airman Brady in Iraq sent a map showing that the packages ended up near the town of Balad. His card states: “Keep up the great work Cub Scouts! We are very proud of you and your families!”

Collected items included: candy, gum, snacks, canned and boxed food items, toiletries, wipes, tissues, stationary, art and office supplies, DVDs, CDs, games, foam footballs, batteries and flashlights.

(And the kids below are in Afghanistan, who have received some of the treats we sent to the troops, which they in turn gave to kids like these two --)

Al,

Thanks to you and all the boys of pack 3 for the goodies. I spread out the stuff in the two boxes down in our coffee shop area and stood by. Both boxes of stuff were pretty much gone after an hour, with many comments from our Sailors, Soldiers, and Marines to thank your boys for their hard work and their kind hearts.

I'll get some small souvenirs to send, but you probably will not get until after the holidays. You can show these to the boys in a January pack meeting (afghan money, some soviet medals, etc etc etc).

Today was our 1/2 day off day (each week) so many folks in photo in PT gear relaxing some.

Once again, thanks Pack 3!!

A Reminder, and a Reminder

Cub Scout Pack 3 -- You've done a great job with the Popcorn/Greens sale, and remember, money turn in is Monday 3 December for your den leaders at the Pack Leader Mtg., so get your stuff to them. "Granville Pack 3" is the right entry for "Pay To the Order Of," and turn in as much as you can in one check written thusly (no cash or coins, please).

As we head for the Christmas season and our own Pack meeting Dec. 13 (a week early this month, with the Toy Drive info posted here shortly), we did a great job with the stuff for the troops overseas. A friend who was recently embedded with British troops in Basra wrote this: "American soldiers get care packages from people they do not even know, and those packages are morale boosters. American soldiers get cards from kindergartens from sea to sea, and the soldiers paste the cards all over the walls of their headquarters and hospitals. I don’t know what it is about those homemade cards, with their squiggly letters, stick figures and smiley-faced suns, but whenever I am in hospitals in Iraq, those cards from the kids greatly lift my spirits. I’ve seen the British get cards and packages like this, but nothing like the quantity, variety and frequency of what American soldiers get."

So it was a pleasure to hear from Cubmaster Al's friend with an engineering battalion in Afghanistan where part of our giving ended up. How did our boxes make their way to soldiers and Marines out in dusty and marshy hinterlands? Look below --

Well, the time is here, and so is the popcorn! The greens will arrive Thursday or before.

Brian Pitcher is currently scheduling a group of kids to arrive at Unipac 4:00 Friday 16th to breakdown the orders into dens and kids. This should avoid any mix ups and speed up the main pick-up Monday. Any volunteers Friday and Monday are more than welcome. Volunteers please arrive Monday by 6:00

Pick-up time is 7:00 Monday, Nov. 19, each level will have their own loading dock.

Please consider Friday, Nov. 16 as the alternate pick-up for people that can't make it Monday.

Please forward this message to all den members and confirm that they receive the notice.

I still have many order forms, which will be returned with orders.
